How to Write an Effective Resume Summary

Avenue Staffing Interview Tips:

  1. When queried about your expected salary in an interview, avoid providing a specific number; instead, present a salary range. For instance, refrain from saying, “I was thinking of X dollars,” and opt for, “For this role, I expect the salary to be in the range of X to Y.” Ensure that the starting point of your range aligns with the salary you desire.
  2. If a potential employer inquires about why you’re leaving your current job, cite a reason that emphasizes something the new employer offers that the current one lacks. For example, if the new job is with a smaller company, say, ‘I’m looking to work for a smaller company.’ If the new position is more hands-on, express, ‘I’m seeking a role where I can be more hands-on.’
  3. Even if you only meet the minimum job requirements, apply anyway. Let the hiring manager decide if you’re a good fit; don’t assume their judgment. Many job descriptions aim high in listing ideal candidate skills, but applying when you genuinely believe you can handle the job has proven successful. Avenue Staffing has observed instances where candidates perceived as underqualified on paper were hired based on their interview performance and positive attitude. Remember, you don’t necessarily need to exceed the job requirements; you just need to outshine the next best candidate.
  4. Inform your interviewers if you’re actively exploring multiple job opportunities. When asked about other roles you’ve applied for, be transparent and mention that you have undergone several interviews and are awaiting responses. This openness can expedite the decision-making process if the company is interested in hiring you.
  5. Save the job description of the positions you apply for; it can be valuable for updating your résumé. Since many companies remove job postings during or after the interview process, keeping a copy of the job description allows you to review and prepare for potential questions. Once you secure the job, use the description to enhance your LinkedIn profile and résumé, showcasing the skills and responsibilities you’ve actively been engaged in.
  6. Immediately add significant projects or accomplishments to your résumé as soon as they are completed. It’s easier to condense information later than to recall forgotten successes. Include not just what you did but also the skills utilized and the business objectives achieved. Maintain a folder for accolades or kudos from your boss or executives, incorporating these into your résumé for annual reviews.
  7. Consider more than just salary when evaluating job opportunities. Calculate the overall compensation package, including benefits, PTO, holidays, 401(k) matching, bonuses, work-from-home options, hybrid work arrangements, and commute times. Assessing all these factors ensures that your investment of time and effort in the job application process is worthwhile.
  8. Stay proactive in adapting to the impact of AI on jobs by acquiring new skills and staying informed. As AI transforms the job market, staying aware of these changes is crucial. Take steps such as learning new skills to enhance your market value, staying current in your field, networking with professionals, and investing in your personal and professional growth. Being proactive prepares you for the evolving job landscape and increases your chances of success in the face of technological advancements like AI.
  9. Questions you could ask at the end of the job interview:

Avenue Staffing is in the business of sending talents to companies to work, and are in charge of hiring; These are some good questions.

What are the challenges of this position?

What are the priorities of this position?

    How has this position evolved?

What have past employees done to succeed in this role?

What do you like most about working in this company?

Do you have any hesitations about my qualifications?

Please tailor which of these you ask to what has already happened in the interview! Further questions should be guided by whether you feel they will add anything to your knowledge of the company/position and will put you in a better light.
